I somehow ended up loving this, when I honestly thought I'd hate it. I'm not a massive fan of City of Bones, I much prefer Cassandra Clare's later works, but I felt the story worked REALLY well as a graphic novel. It was fun to relive the story through this format! Excited for the next volume.

Well, it could have been worse. It could have been unreadable. Like most fans of The Mortal Instruments, I had been waiting for a graphic novel adaptation for a very long time. I thought we would have one much earlier than this, but better late than never, right? This is actually a good adaptation, in terms of story, pacing and atmosphere. Cassandra Jean illustrates all important scenes that appear in the first half of City of Bones. Indeed, this first volume covers everything—or so—up to Simon’s Well, it could have been worse. Cassandra Jean illustrates all important scenes that appear in the first half of City of Bones. Indeed, this first volume covers everything—or so—up to Simon’s mishap at Magnus’. That’s fine, because it means nothing is rushed to the point of not understanding what is happening. Even Jace’s little story about the boy and his falcon is featured. Plus there is an extra scene between Isabelle and Simon that is not included in the original first book. I heart it. So the story is enjoyable and not saturated with narration or dialog, as was the manga adaptation of The Infernal Devices, thank goodness. What I do have to complain about, sadly, is the physical appearance of ALL of the characters. Honestly, what happened? I absolutely adore Cassandra Jean’s work. This is my fourth or fifth book from her, so I’m familiar with her drawing style. But these drawings look unfinished, as though she rushed to make them to keep up with her schedule. Alec, Isabelle, Clary, Simon… They look nothing like I expected. They are so… bland. They have no interesting features. Even Magnus Bane—my favourite character—is kind of… unattractive. It hurts to say this, because I love the hell out of him. They aren’t even charming or cute. Just… boring. Crossed fingers for better illustrations in the future volumes. Although I haven’t read the original book, I knew some of the things that were gonna happen from the movie and the show. The illustrations were really good and I will definitely read the other graphic novels in this series! 👏🏻❤️

Now I'm no expert on these matters, so I don't know what I'm looking for here... It was okay to say this is my first ever Graphic Novel. It's just a shame it's not the full version and there's a second part. The things I liked? - We got to see the Falcon story Jace tells Clary - Little bits of pieces, there's a book on Peru in Magnus's room which was very fitting! - The height difference between Jace and Clary was so cute! - CHURCH! Overall, not what I expected, but still pretty enjoyable!

I didn't even realize until reading this, but I miss my TMI babies so damn much. This is a gorgeous adaptation and I am absolutely in awe of how perfectly the artist captured these characters!

Who knew this was so funny? I loved this first graphic novel instalment of TMI! *big shock* I have never read any of Cassandra Clare's books, (despite owning the whole TMI and TID series) but I wanted to try out TMI in graphic novel format first before I fully committed myself to the novels which are waaay thicker. After reading this introductory volume, I'm really very intrigued by the plot and how it will continue. I loved Jace and Magnus but I think my favourite is Alec *swoon* I have read the Who knew this was so funny? I'm not the biggest fan of graphic novels but The mortal instruments is the series that got me into reading and it's always gonna be a favorite of mine so of course I bought this new release! And well, I love Cassandra Jean's drawings and the characters really look like how I've pictured them in my head. I didn't give 5 full stars just because the story moved too fast (even if this is just the first volume, the last scene is Magnus's party, before the Hotel Dumort's fight scene). Bless Cassandra Jean and her art. Bless. I'm sad we only had something like 1/3 of the book, but at the same time I'm glad because it means nothing from the original story will be cut.

The Mortal Instruments is brought to life again with this new graphic novel inspired by the first novel in the largely popular series. I loved seeing this story again with illustrations and the condensed story and the whole book was over far too quickly. Overall, it was a nice adaption of the first book in series and it seemed like while they covered a fair amount of the story but at times it was disjointed and without a flow. 3.5 stars I loved reading this and read it in basically two sittings. I’m not sure if I would’ve loved it as much had I not read the full novels of the mortal instruments though. It would be hard to tell. But as it was, I would 100% go back to these graphic if I need a quick Shadowhunter fix and/or refresh on the story but don’t have time for a full series reread. I didn’t like the art style quite as much as the first graphic novel I read a couple weeks back but it wasn’t bad. I've always been a fan of Cassandra Jean and once again she didn't let me down. I loved the arts and the way she depicted the characters. This graphic novel cover the first 6 chapters of city of bones and so far it stayed very true to the book storyline. I'm definitely looking forward to volume 2!

Okay, I’m going to be real for a second: I originally rated the novel version of this book 2 stars. Well, maybe it was more like 2.5 stars. But, nevertheless, I just did not love it and when people saw my rating I was… met with some rather unhappy responses. Here’s my opinion on The Mortal Instrument series: they’re fun and consumable, and they have stood up well over the years. They have good world building, action, and romance. But what grips me the most is the very complex history and connections between all the characters/families. I think Cassandra Clare does such an amazing job in building the Shadowhunter/Downworlder worlds and each book gets stronger and stronger. Are they literary masterpieces? I mean, that’s not my decision to make. And I’m not going to drag anyone who likes these books because you are allowed to enjoy what you want. This series has overall been really fun for me to read and I will continue to read however many more books Cassandra Clare publishes. Now with that being said, I did not love book 1 in this series because it read like bad Harry Potter fanfic. However this graphic novel was a wonderful new way for me to dive back into this world. I really recommend this if you’re wanting a refresher or cliffnotes version of what happened in book 1 (but keep in mind this graphic novel is only a portion of the novel.) And, dare I say it? But I found Jace so much more likeable in the graphic novel version! However, I don’t love the art. At times some panels looked really poorly drawn and it was confusing during some action sequences. And there were a few times where I thought Clary and Izzy looked oddly drawn. However, I really love the cover art and wished we could’ve gotten the entire graphic novel in full color. Overall I really enjoyed diving back into this world. There were a lot of things I forgot (like, hello, Hodge. I forgot about you) and it was fun to be able to visualize it all. I thought Jace’s falcon story was depicted very well and all the pertinent information wasn’t glossed over. I really think if you’re a huge fan of this series then you may enjoy these graphic novels, too! Blog | Instagram | Twitter

Is it fair of me to read graphic novels and score them badly knowing that I hate graphic novels? This felt extremely low effort. I'm not a fan of Cassandra Jean's artwork for the Mortal Instruments universe and it didn't do any better in graphic novel form. This was an extremely brief book, that entirely skipped big chunks of important information and seemed to rely heavily on you having read the novels. It was weak and not to my taste in the slightest.
