Well, I wanted to rate this book 2⭐ , but then I sat here and asked myself what is the extra star for? And I could not come up with an answer. So, I wanted to read this book since it *was* the last one in this series. I was somewhere around the 40% mark, and I thought that the story was really dragging and nothing was happening, well, nothing which would move the story closer to the end and resolving everything. And I could not come up with an answer. So, I wanted to read this book since it *was* the last one in this series. I was somewhere around the 40% mark, and I thought that the story was really dragging and nothing was happening, well, nothing which would move the story closer to the end and resolving everything. (And I believe that was one of the issues I had with Vicious Minds Part 1, I thought that there was so much unnecessary stuff that if half of it were cut there would be no need for book five.) And this book really seemed to have the same problem. And what a shock. This is not that last book! It had to be pointed out to me because I had no idea. I would absolutely finish this book, and then I would stare at the: "To Be Continued". Why? Every character is just destroyed, completely shredded to little idiots only to built up Calliope. (view spoiler)[Even Liam and Mel, I mean they were shooting at her in a room, and they were not able to get her? (hide spoiler)] I mean Calliope supposedly teased Ethan in public, I would say more that she humiliated him, to be honest. At this point, Ethan is Calliope's Ivy. (view spoiler)[And I'm sure that the author has an explanation ready, how he did it only so that he can get what is his ultimate goal and whatever. The point is that Ethan just turned into a totally meek character who is just there to play second fiddle to Calliope. (hide spoiler)] And I do not care how the next (not going to call it last just to be sure) book is going to spin this. That he was again lying in his POV? Oh, and I almost forgot, since I'm talking about Ethan here (somehow this is just Calliope show now), let's just mention that I do not feel any chemistry between him and Calliope. None. So, to probably the biggest thing that happened in this book which was basically almost at the end of it. (view spoiler)[ Calliope kills Coraline and I honestly thought that she was poisoning her for some time because she was coughing at one scene (maybe Cora was sick again?) but no, Calliope stabbed her. Plus then Mel and Liam attack Calliope. (hide spoiler)] And right after that I just went to cook lunch. It was probably the most *shocking* moment, and only a couple of chapters left, and I did not care one bit. And that's the problem. With everything going on. With trying to build-up Calliope. And maybe to even trump the Ruthless People? Like to show that the children's series can be more ruthless and more everything than the original. Unfortunately, for me, it does not work. It makes it forced. Unbelievable. Even artificial. Sort of like a fake version of the story? And slowly while reading this book, I realised that I did not care for anything. Not for the story. Not for the characters. Not who's going to die, live, rule and whatever. And not just in this series, this includes the Ruthless People as well, one of my most re-read series ever. I just cannot find it me to be interested in the story anymore because no matter what the next spin of the events will be, I won't trust it. And I mean that. The author could take every single character I loved, kill them all and I would be like, yeah and? This spin-off or more precisely adding more books to it destroyed all characters for me, even Mel and Liam. And the thing is I wish the events made me angry because then I would at least feel something towards this book. J.J. books usually made me feel so much, laugh, be angry and even cry, so, this emptiness is just shocking, and this really is a 1⭐ from me.

I told myself I will not read this but here we go... I am so disappointed!!! how to ruin an amazing series? write a spin-off with the kids... make me expect three books then write book four and rewrite what happened in said three books... make that book four a prologue for book five... come up with book five as not so final book but more of a filler... because there is apparently book six which (let's pray) it is a final book.... add a new character in book four that you center the entire plotline of these new books, try to build her up only by ruining beloved characters from previous books... and there you have it...a perfectly ruined series... and that series is Ruthless People if anyone is confused.... look, what is the problem here is that nothing of this is planned and you can't convince me otherwise... and what happens when you try to build up the solid story arc of a series on a whim well it is clear as day that it becomes; * unbelievable * weak * shatters any trust I had in the author How for the love of God you can make me trust you when I spend the entire time reading this book like I was solving a puzzle...thinking over every single movement and sentence of each character, thinking how can be interpreted and twisted in the next book, what does it all means, is it real or will it all be different in the next book... not to mention what happened with Ivy and all other previous books in this spin-off I don't see book six as a book that will bring me satisfying closure of a series that I hold near and dear to my heart...of the characters that I love...I don't see any scenario like the one that can clean the mess of this and previous book... and that is just...SAD!!

I don't think I have ever been as disappointed by an author's plan for a series and her characters. I honestly get the feeling that the author hates her own characters. She constantly creates them, builds them up, only to completely tear them down, and not in an understandable way where one can understand that it was planned that way. Haphazardly and cruelly. I use the first example: Ivy O' Davoren. Ivy was a well planned character right up until the end of her actual Vicious Minds by J.J. McAvoy. Ivy was a well planned character right up until the end of her actual book. Readers were left a clue to her importance in the last book of the original series "Ruthless People" - A Bloody Kingdom. The interaction between her and Ethan was pure and had a sense of fate. Their book, the first in the spin-off series "Children of Vice" was a great book. I, as well as many other readers enjoyed it. The book was told from both characters - Ivy and Ethan's - perspectives and the chemistry was more than palpable. Both characters had their individual qualities and complemented one another. They were strong characters. Sadly, after some readers expressed dissatisfaction with her characters (apparently Ivy was too little like his mother - which yikes! Every woman's nightmare .. ), the author pulled a total 180° by starting to set up Ivy as a weak and incompetent Stepford wife in "Children of Ambition" (second book) - contrary to her vengeful and determined character development in the first book- so that she could kill her off and replace her with someone, Calliope who was more like the female protagonist of the first series, Ethan's mother: Melody. She then continued to completely character assassinate (after she was already cruelly killed off) by having her entire story invalidated. Apparently, her entire relationship with Ethan was a lie and product of a plan he hatched with his actual partner, rendering Ivy a weak and imbecilic pawn in a game. My issue was this: the relationship was not observed from a third party who could be tricked. We had the experience of the relationship straight from a source- Ethan. When asked about the gigantic oversight, McAvoy's response was that Ethan was tricking himself in order to get through the task........Somehow Ethan manages to have 2 concurrent streams of thought. No Ms McAvoy, I do not accept that. Some things cannot be unwritten, a character's POV in a published book is one. I would suggest a quick study on Hermeneutics to know more about writing a secondary test on an established text, even if it is one's own writing. Vicious Minds part 1 could have gone so many different ways, but the writer (for shock value) decided to go the route she did. She chose to underestimate her readers' intelligence and take advantage of their loyalty. This kind of writing is shoddy at the very least. There was a lesson to be learnt from it: once you have started on a course, finish it, epecially as a writer. Do not go back or derail yourself because you feel dissatisfied. Readers can feel it when you do. Rather improve on what you have than try to erase it. The reason we ask for things in writing, is because what is once written, cannot be erased as easily. The newest book upset me in the first few pages already, because while the author notes every single character to have played a role in her series, she does not even give Ivy a sentence, basically sweeping away an entire character who was a protagonist her writing. And so much can be said for Ivy's character. Not that she was stupid or weak or incompetent as is later expressed via other characters in the books (opinions that strangely none of the characters had until she was dead, and apparently being a pawn makes her weak but characters like Ethan and Calliope strong..). The most important thing I have to say about her is that she was a character with so much potential, but the author chose to assassinate her completely, even in memory because she was either influenced by dissatisfied fans, or she was trying to add more drama to be able to write more books. And that is disappointing. Now, the second character assassination I see is in her treatment of Ethan at the moment. The guy was a great readable character in the first book, he was intelligent and sharp and while he (in my opinion) loved, he was not weakened by it. In Vicious Minds 1 and 2, he proved to be the very antithesis of all his character was in "Children of Vice". He is weak and incompetent and I honestly would have preferred he died a respectable leader than a fool blinded by a woman. As a reader, I have little to no trust in the author anymore. She goes back on her own characters too often. After her character assassination of Ivy across the last 3 books, I am worried that she is likewise preparing to tear down Ethan in the same way. Making him truly irredeemable. Because that's all readers want at this point, a man who realises his mistakes, who regrets giving his trust to the wrong people and feels remorse for the lives lost on his watch or in his search for power and loss in lust. Even just some remorse before his death would be great, after all: "If we must cry, we cry for family." (Ethan and Wyatt Callahan, Children of Vice). The author has mentioned in online communications that she wanted readers to feel a wide array of emotions while reading. That's great, but at this point, I think it's more important that she remembers that readers mainly want to feel happiness and validation when finishing a book or series. They want closure. A  most unsettling feeling is being able to feel nothing but anger at an author's betrayal and thoughtlessness after reading a book. Hopefully, we'll see an improvement on characters who are looking shabby at the moment and justice done to the essence of characters instead of author's disregard for all her other characters, in order to glorify one. Hopefully, she will take into consideration that while she writes them, we read them. So they belong to us too. We have a right to them as well. Hopefully, she will be guided by the narrative that she herself has previously established, rather than be solely influenced by her or our emotions. Writing is a tough process, but if one follows a simple and balanced recipe of self-expression, attention to target audience and most importantly narrative then the product should be perfect.

Take them out and I want nothing to do with this spin off. I know they cannot rule forever but if Mel and Liam get killed off in a way that is not worthy to these legends then I am done! I know Ethan is smart...I know he cannot be blindly in love with someone who is out to destroy his family but in this book all he did was let Calliope come in and win his family over only to tear them apart. And for what!?! Calliope is a pawn to her grandparents. She has no believable reason to destroy the Callahan's, which is why I am sure that this is all part of hers and Ethan's plan. We dont know everything yet. I just hope this plan of theirs was worth Calliope killing off a Callahan. Because that to me is unforgivable. Unless that person isnt dead I dont see how either Calliope or Ethan could gain back the family's respect...cause no doubt Calliope's schemes and lies will surface, I highly doubt any forgiveness will be given. It family or nothing in their world...and I stand by Liam and Mel killing both Ethan and Calliope if they keep this up. 2 stars for this book because of that ending. I trust JJ enough to read the next book...I know she loves these characters the most so just have to trust her. (She is pushing it though)

I'm disappointed. I honestly didn't think the oldest son of Liam and Melody would be so weak, blind, and stupid. I honestly can't see where the third book is going to go. I don't even know if I'll read the third book, in the first part when I found out that Ivy was nothing to Ethan, I honestly felt my heart break. The fascination Ethan has for Calliope is.... so confusing and I don't understand it. At all. Calliope poisons him, admits to wanting to destroy his family, kills his aunt, destroys billions of dollars towards his business, and tries to kill his parents and Ethan STILL wants to be by her side. I'm beyond confused. I can see that Ethan has some doubts about Calliope but he still sticks by her and chooses her and this isn't noble of him, I saw Ethan as a worthless, dumb, and selfish leader. I also didn't read any of Calliope's past because... I just didn't care. I don't care for Calliope. I hate her as a character, she bothers me so much. All in all this book wasn't fun to read, I was expecting more fight action and killing instead of Calliope's worthless and emotionally unmoved sob story. This story emphasized how unworthy Ethan is and in Part 1 I just wanted Calliope to die, but now Ethan and Calliope have to die because this is unacceptable.

My guess is, they're both gonna die. From killing each other. Ethan for revenge. Calliope for betraying the family. Remember the Callahan family rules? 1. You kill for family. You die for family because you can’t trust anyone else. Ethan will kill Calliope for family and will die for his family. Ironic. So will it be the rise of Killian? Or the rise of Wyatt, the second son? Anyway, we can do nothing but wait. Again. Hopefully, the next book will be TRULY be the last book. Fingers crossed.

I am huge fan of J.J. McAvoy and I loved the Ruthless People series. But I am utterly disappointed with this book. The character arch, the narrative, the storyline everything is just so disappointing. Vicious Minds has been about Calliope and this book even more. But that whole secret agenda what needs the Callahan blood and the blood of Ethan to make her Kingdom feels totally like betrayal. And it makes me soooooo mad that Ethan, all mighty that he can be, is a mere puppet in the hands of the puppet-master Calliope. Behold, Ethan was never really charming and lovable. His only saving grace was that he was the leoncino of his mother. And we could trust Mel to make him a mighty man. As such, I loved the genius in him that made him always a step ahead. Everybody was playing his game and all of it for the good of the family. Even as he looks like he was losing we could trust that in reality he was the one winning. Ethan always knew best. Ethan always knew everything before everybody. This Ethan right here, knows nothing. He is getting played and is more at a loss than everyone. I mean come on Ethan. Such a disappointment. At this point, I'm waiting for someone in the family to rise against him, wyatt or Darcy, wouldn't be so bad. Or even better, that Dona meets again her parents and makes a come back and fights her brother to put back some logic in his head. What is he waiting for, that she puts a bullet in the whole family's heads and his own? That the only ones that remain are her daughter and her? I never thought Ethan would fall so low. I love the devotion and blind trust between mel and Liam. I wished for it to be the legacy of Ethan and whoever becomes his wife but now I am regretting this. Does she want to be like this? Or is she just being played also by her gpa? I was so hoping that she would kill that bastard grandfather and make her own rules. That she proves to everyone that she has her own agenda, away from her gpa. Does she only want to destroy the family? What is wrong with her? I am so lost right now.

This book was a satisfying read for me and let me tell you , To your disappointment (view spoiler)[ THIS IS NOT THE LAST BOOK AND THERE IS GOING TO BE ANOTHER BOOK AND THIS ONE AS USUAL WAS A CLIFFHANGER (hide spoiler)] Mos of my questions from the last series were answered in this book but the negative part is that i have a new bunch of questions and god knows when those are going to be answered. (view spoiler)[ I couldn't help but be a little disappointed by Ethan, because he pretty much justified whatever calliope did. No matter who she killed , whether it was someone of his family, he found a reason in ti. Seemed pretty dumb to me. (hide spoiler)] Rest i'll leave to your opinion , but for me this book was not as good as I was expecting. I recommend this to the mafia loving people , because i have read a lot of book sand even i must say that here is no family as ruthless as the Callahans.

I hate Calliope. With that out of the way we can actually start the review. Joy, frustration, anger, weeping, I went through every possible emotion while reading this book. Let me start with this, J.J you’re amazing. The world you’ve created for us is undoubtedly the best one. It’s filled with chaos and painted in red but we still wouldn’t change a thing about it. Aaa… maybe a thing or two won’t hurt but okay… With how VM1 ended I thought we would see the master plan unravel in this book. Honestly, I hate Calliope. The world you’ve created for us is undoubtedly the best one. It’s filled with chaos and painted in red but we still wouldn’t change a thing about it. Aaa… maybe a thing or two won’t hurt but okay… With how VM1 ended I thought we would see the master plan unravel in this book. Honestly, the best part of the book was Gigi. Her love and adoration for her father was what kept me going through allot of chapters. While I completely understand Ethan’s lack of emotions, I do wish he was a little more expressive with Gigi. Calliope on the other hand? It felt like she’s trying too hard to fit in title of “Mrs Callahan”. I gave a fair chance. I liked her in VM1 but in VM2 despite trying so hard I couldn’t form a connection with her. And Ethan? I mean seriously Ethan? I didn’t even recognize him anymore in this book. Is he really THAT Ethan? Wasn’t his nickname the II Burattinaio? Seriously it looked like he was the puppet instead of the puppet master. He did nothing but take orders from Calliope. I mean WTH?! He blindly followed her EVERYWHERE. While he kept repeating, he doesn’t trust her. He doesn’t look like he has any sense left at all. It was so frustrating to watch, I had to put the book down for several hours and kept shouting in my head for him to DO SOMETHING. "Nothing that is great is born without pain" I understand that but did she really have to do THAT to prove it? But that’s you JJ, we knew something big was gonna happen in this book but still nothing could have prepared us for this. The only upside of the book is Ethan’s call with the Queen Bee herself. It looked like he was planning something, that and his conversation with Darcy/Killian is the only thing which gave any indication that he’s still Melody’s firstborn. What if all this is his plan too? When did he figure out Calliope was behind everything? And above all, Will he do something about it now that he knows? Seriously wait for VM3 is going to be excruciatingly long. I really hope you make us fall in love with Calliope in VM3, because she truly is Ethan’s soulmate. Only if she wasn’t such a bitch, arrogant and flashy, she could have been as loved as Mel….or maybe not. For there can only be ONE QUEEN in the kingdom, and no matter how much she tries, Calliope can never fill Mel’s shoes. #teammelodyalways.

Killing your black character for shock value just don't sit right with me you guys I don't know. Calliope had so many potentials to be one of my favorite characters of the series but she just keeps confusing me I love me some crazy characters but that ain't it. Also the multi povs just don't work for me anymore most of the time I kept scrolling through the pages.......don't even know if I want to continue the series to be honest feels like I'm not rooting for anyone :(

Like again? Leaving with a cliffhanger? This was supposed to be the ending.. And after such a good part 1 this is a huge disappointment. Like she is just dragging the story for the sake of finishing it. Woman take your time but give us a good ending. You are just pushing it now.

I am not one to leave reviews, but I just had to. I followed this series before the books even became published. When it was only a twilight fanfic, so I’m sad to say I hated this book. I didn’t like vicious minds part 1 but I was able to finish it, but this book here I can’t finish. I just hope the next book is the last in this series and that it ends on a good note. But I just wish these last 2 books doesn’t exist.
